A New Decade with New Drug Reforms: Challenges & Opportunities
John Herbert, Director, Product & Clinical Services, ESI Canada
Cory Cowan, Manager, Product & Clinical Services, ESI Canada
As plan sponsors prepare for a new decade, they do so in the midst of drug reforms which hold significant potential. In the early 2000’s, drug trend increased at double-digit rates fuelled by blockbuster drugs for common conditions. Many of these drugs are now losing patent protection which has lowered drug trend in recent years; however, plan sponsors are struggling with the increasing presence of high-cost specialty drugs. We look back over the past decade to help explain some of the trends we are seeing today. We’ll also highlight the provincial drug reforms which are set to shape the pharmacy landscape for the future. Finally, we explore ways plan sponsors can reduce waste to help ensure the sustainability of their drug plans for the next decade.
